Experience in the Aviation and Maritime Industries
In 2017, BEST began consulting with the Port of Seattle to develop a four-fold strategy to take a leadership role in addressing human trafficking issues through (1) training, (2) communications, (3) partnerships, and (4) policies and protocols. Using our collaborative methodology, BEST first led a process involving local experts from criminal justice, survivor services, Port employees, tenant employees, and survivors of human trafficking in order to create victim response protocols that would be coordinated with local existing victim responses and build trust with local experts. Second, BEST involved many of the same experts in creating the Port of Seattle’s online video training courses—one for the maritime industry and a second for the aviation industry, named Ports to Freedom and Flights to Freedom. They are centered around personal stories from human trafficking survivors and bystanders. The courses empower employees to understand the signs of human trafficking and know the appropriate and safe steps to take if they suspect trafficking. BEST also assisted the Port of Seattle to launch a large-scale unified public awareness campaign in January of 2019. Led by the Port of Seattle, in conjunction with many regional partners from the government, nonprofit, and corporate sectors, the campaign helped increase human trafficking awareness. Our outreach efforts included ads and posters that were placed all around SeaTac airport and the Port of Seattle’s maritime facilities, as well as in regional buses, trains, health clinics, libraries, law enforcement offices, public defender offices, community centers, and in many business facilities. These efforts helped the Port of Seattle and their partners reach an ultimate goal—to increase public awareness about what human trafficking can look like, and to teach the public how to help if they witness a trafficking situation
